Tensions between India and Pakistan have once again spilled into the cultural space. After India reportedly restricted access to the social media accounts of several Pakistani celebrities, including popular actress Hania Aamir, Pakistan has responded by banning Indian songs on its FM radio stations and other Indian content from being aired.
The move by India comes after the recent Pahalgam attack, which has reignited diplomatic and public backlash. Pakistani Instagram profiles like Hania Aamir’s are no longer accessible to users in India, indicating a tightening of digital boundaries.
In retaliation, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has enforced a strict ban on broadcasting Indian content on Pakistani TV channels and FM radios. This includes Indian movies, songs, and dramas.
This is not the first time cultural exchanges have been cut off amid political tensions. Similar actions were taken by both sides following the Uri attack in 2016 and Pulwama in 2019. As a result, artists and audiences on both sides continue to be caught in the crossfire of political decisions.
