Eid Journey Turns Tragic in Bangladesh: Launch Crash and Train Derailment Shatter Homecoming Dreams

Thousands left Dhaka on Wednesday with bags stuffed full of gifts and heads full of excitement, the kind that only Eid travel brings. For most, it was the familiar chaos of going home. For some families, it became something much harder to carry back.

At Sadarghat, where the river never really sleeps during the festive rush, two passenger launches collided in the middle of the country's busiest terminal. At least one person died. Several others fell into the river and went missing. Rescue teams were out there searching, but the waterways were packed, visibility was poor, and families on the banks had no choice but to wait and hope.

Around the same time, the Nilsagar Express carrying passengers north toward their hometowns derailed in Bogura. Multiple coaches came off the tracks. Between 60 and 66 people were injured, some of them seriously. People who had been counting down the hours to reach home were suddenly stranded, shaken, and far from anywhere familiar. Rail connections across several northern routes ground to a halt, and the ripple effect stretched across an already overwhelmed travel network.

Investigations are underway. Early indications point to a possible signal miscommunication in the train accident. The launch collision is also being looked into. But the probes will take time, and for the families affected, the timeline that matters most already went wrong.

Bangladesh's transport system carries an almost impossible load every Eid season, and that pressure rarely stays invisible for long. This year, it showed itself in the worst possible way, not once, but twice, within hours of each other.

The journeys continued for millions. The celebrations still happened. But these two incidents left a quiet grief behind them, the kind that sits alongside the joy rather than replacing it, a reminder of just how much rides on these trips home, and how much can change in a moment on the water or on the tracks.
