The Netflix original movie Emilia Perez has taken center stage at this year’s Oscar nominations, earning an impressive 13 nods. This Spanish-language musical tells the story of a Mexican drug lord who transitions to a woman and starts a new life, captivating audiences and critics alike.
Joining the race for Best Picture are The Brutalist, a 3 1/2-hour epic about a Holocaust survivor turned architect pursuing the American dream, and the much-anticipated Wicked, a prequel to The Wizard of Oz. Both films secured 10 nominations each, setting the stage for a highly competitive awards season.
Other contenders in the Best Picture category include the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown starring Timothée Chalamet, the dark comedy Anora, and the dramatic Conclave, which delves into the intrigue of a papal election. The remaining nominees are the science-fiction blockbuster Dune: Part 2, Brazilian political docudrama I'm Still Here, the racial drama Nickel Boys, and horror thriller The Substance.
Karla Sofía Gascón, the star of Emilia Perez, made history as the first openly transgender actor to be nominated for an acting Oscar. Her groundbreaking performance has garnered widespread acclaim, shining a spotlight on the importance of representation in Hollywood.
“I am honored to be part of this moment and to share this story with the world,” Gascón said in a statement following her nomination.
The Best Actor category is packed with talent, including Chalamet, Adrien Brody for his role in The Brutalist, and Sebastian Stan, who portrayed a young Donald Trump in The Apprentice. Jeremy Strong also received a Supporting Actor nod for his portrayal of Trump’s lawyer, Roy Cohn.
In the Best Actress race, Demi Moore earned recognition for her portrayal of a fading celebrity in The Substance. Meanwhile, Wicked stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively, for their roles as students who transform into the iconic witches of Oz. Grande shared her excitement on social media, writing, “Picking my head up in between sobs to say thank you. I cannot stop crying.”
Despite multiple nominations over the years for films like Roma and The Irishman, Netflix has yet to secure a Best Picture win. Emilia Perez might just be the film to break that streak, as its theatrical release strategy has proven successful in qualifying for major awards.
Awards analyst Marc Malkin predicts a tight race for the top prize, with Wicked, Conclave, and The Brutalist being the strongest contenders. “Everyone loved Wicked, and Conclave has gained momentum through word-of-mouth buzz,” he noted.
This year’s Oscar nominations were announced in Beverly Hills against the backdrop of ongoing wildfires that have ravaged parts of Los Angeles. The devastation has disrupted Hollywood’s awards season, causing delays to red-carpet events and prompting industry leaders to reflect on resilience in the face of adversity.
“We will honor the talented filmmakers nominated today, pay tribute to our brave first responders, and celebrate the enduring spirit of Los Angeles and the film industry,” said Bill Kramer, CEO of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
The Oscars will take place on March 2 in Hollywood, with comedian Conan O’Brien hosting the event. The ceremony promises to be a celebration of creativity and perseverance, as the film industry showcases its best work while navigating challenging times.
